Sony adds mobile billing option to PlayStation Store, SEN

Sony adds mobile billing option to PlayStation Store, SENIn addition to credit cards, pre-paid giftcards and PayPal, the PlayStation Store and Sony Entertainment Network now support a "mobile billing" option for buying Hatsune Miku DLC, episodes of Teen Wolf, Music Unlimited subscriptions and whatever else the kids are into these days.

When adding funds to your virtual wallet through either the PS3's PlayStation Store or SEN's Account Management site, selecting the "Use Mobile" option will initiate the procedure. After receiving and confirming a text message (standard carrier rates apply, natch), the amount added to your wallet will either be tacked onto your phone bill, or deducted from your pre-paid phone account if that's how your plan swings.

We're still holding out for a poultry-based bartering system. How many chickens do you think Battlefield 4 DLC is going to cost?JoystiqSony adds mobile billing option to PlayStation Store, SEN originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 Aug 2013 20:45:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Magic 2014 summons its first expansion next month

Magic 2014 summons its first expansion next month
Come September 18, Magic 2014 - Duels of the Planeswalkers will tap the necessary mana to call forth its first official expansion.

The list of additions the expansion is said to deliver are pretty much exactly what you'd expect: More cards, new campaign levels and new challenges. Specifically, those who purchase the addition will find five new decks at their disposal for a total of 280 additional, unique cards. Six new campaign levels also join the extant Magic 2014 feature set, along with five new challenges designed to test players' abilities to survive in specific gameplay scenarios.

Finally, the expansion also brings with it a host of new unlockable items for players skilled enough to find them. These include additional trophies, achievements and new portraits for your in-game avatar.

Absent from today's announcement is an official price point for the expansion, though if the expansions released for earlier Magic titles are any indicator, this addition should be priced somewhere between $3 to $5.

Monster Loves You on iOS and Android this October

Monster Loves You on iOS and Android this OctoberMonster Loves You, Dejobaan Games' ferociously charming adventure game, will arrive on iOS and Android this fall. The game launched on Steam in March, and is available for $9.99.

Dejobaan told Joystiq at PAX Prime that the studio is aiming for an October 10 release date for the mobile version of Monster Loves You.

Describing how the game evolved on PC, Dejobaan Games' Ichiro Lambe said that the month Monster Loves You launched on Steam, it underwent changes from being a "life simulator" to a choose-your-adventure game, cutting a number of the game's elements out entirely. Choices made by players in the game affect different personality traits, from kindness to honesty, shaping the arc of the game's story, which Lambe said is a carry-over from its original life simulation ambitions.JoystiqMonster Loves You on iOS and Android this October originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 30 Aug 2013 19:00:00 EST. Moore: Not every EA game will require online connection

Last week at Gamescom, Peter Moore made some statements to the effect that EA no longer ships offline games, but products that are enmeshed in online and social functionality. In a missive on the EA blog today, Moore added clarity to those statements, saying EA's approach does not mean all its games are required to be online.

"Many, if not most, of our games include single-player, offline modes that you can play entirely without an Internet connection, if you so choose," Moore wrote. "We know that's something many of our players want, and we will continue to deliver it."

Moore went on to address growing negative perceptions toward EA's free-to-play lineup, specifically Command & Conquer. "We will continue to explore new free-to-play experiences for our franchises when we believe there is gamer interest and a cool new game we can build. But of course we will continue to deliver award-winning core gaming experiences on ALL of these franchises." While many EA franchises offer free-to-play options, Moore said it is not a sweeping company mandate for all EA games moving forward.JoystiqMoore: Not every EA game will require online connection originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 27 Aug 2013 22:00:00 EST. Indie game Gentlemen! was bought 144 times, pirated over 50,000

Indie game Gentlemen! was bought 144 times, pirated over 50kGentlemen! by Lucky Frame is a popular indie title for Android tablets, iPad, PC and Mac that has players swap gravity, chuck knives, and send homing pigeons at one another in local multiplayer deathmatches. It has garnered critical praise and the Android version has been downloaded more than 50,000 times - unfortunately, as of four days ago, only 144 of those downloads were legitimate, while the rest were pirated.

Yann Seznec, director of Lucky Frame, shared the disparaging data via a Gamasutra blog, where he tried to decipher why things went south. The largest group of pirates, Seznec found, came from Russia and China, where "... most of these pirates probably exist in a commercial ecosystem where the Google Play store does not even exist, and it doesn't occur to them to buy any games from there at all."

Seznec also pointed out that the game had some unlikely competition - South Korean singer Psy's hit, "Gentleman" - that made the game difficult to discover thanks to a flood of apps which hoped to capitalize on the song's viral success. The whole story is a bit heartbreaking, and Seznec wrote that for the moment, he doesn't have much of a conclusion to make, but that he and his team have a lot to learn going forward.JoystiqIndie game Gentlemen! was bought 144 times, pirated over 50,000 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 24 Aug 2013 19:00:00 EST. Broken Sword: The Serpent's Curse, the fifth entry in the long-running adventure game series, is coming to the PS Vita.

"The PS Vita is an ideal device for an adventure game - the combination of the front and rear touch screen, as well as the analog stick and shoulder buttons, gives us so much scope to create a really great user interface," Charles Cecil, Revolution Software co-founder, writes on the PlayStation Blog. Sadly, the majority of his post recounts the series' legacy and doesn't go into any specifics about the PS Vita port.

Broken Sword: The Serpent's Curse, due later this year, is also coming to PC, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android. Fran Bow finally has something to smile about: $20K on Indiegogo

Fran Bow finally has something to smile about $20K on Indiegogo
Fran Bow is a psychological thriller and adorable adventure rolled into one point-and-click package, and it just passed its funding goal of $20,000 on Indiegogo with seven days remaining. Fran, the young girl in the game, witnesses the brutal murder of her parents and slips into insanity, ending up in a children's mental institution. She must work out how to escape and stay (mostly) sane by solving puzzles in the asylum.

One game mechanic is the ability to pop pills to see another layer of the world that can potentially aid in the riddles, regardless of how horrifying those new visions may be.

Fran Bow comes from Killmonday, a husband-and-wife development team (Isak and Natalia) based in Sweden. The story itself derives from Natalia's personal struggles as a child, as she explains in a blog post on the Killmonday site.

Fran Bow is due out in July 2014 for PC, Mac, Linux, Windows 8, Android and iOS, and with the successful funding, it may come to more platforms (Wii U or Ouya) later on. Smile, Fran. PopCap CEO talks free-to-play model for Plants vs. Zombies 2

PopCap CEO explains freetoplay model for Plants vs Zombies 2PopCap CEO Dave Roberts discussed Plants vs. Zombies 2's free-to-play business model with GeekWire last week, mentioning both the game's swift adoption rate and the ire it has inspired from some fans.

"I don't think anyone at EA has seen anything go up that fast to the top downloads," Roberts said. "My guess, by lunch [on launch day], we will have hit the same number of downloads that it took us five months to hit in the first version. It probably took us close to a year to hit that number on the PC."

While noting that many view free-to-play as "evil," Robers pointed out that the majority of the top-grossing games in the App Store are free-to-play. "People have decided that free-to-play is a better way for them to monetize. And, some of the purists would argue that the industry has made them do that."

Roberts suggested there are "ways to abuse any business model, and people sometimes say: 'Yeah, you can do horrible things with that.' Yeah, of course you can ... With PvZ we have a pretty important brand here and we are trying to protect it."

PvZ2 is currently available for iOS devices and will cross-pollinate to other platforms "later this year and beyond."JoystiqPopCap CEO talks free-to-play model for Plants vs. Zombies 2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 18 Aug 2013 22:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Beyond: Two Souls has multiplayer, an app that turns touchscreens into controllers

Beyond Two Souls has twoplayer coop, use smartphone as controllerBeyond: Two Souls features two-player, co-op multiplayer, with one person controlling Jodi Holmes, the main protagonist, and the other controlling of Aiden, the entity tethered to her entire existence, Quantic Dream founder David Cage revealed at Gamescom. Players pass control between Jodi and Aiden, on a single screen, by pressing triangle. Yes, press triangle to Jodi.

In multiplayer or solo, Beyond is playable with iOS and Android touchscreen devices, with the "Beyond Touch" app. It's a free app that allows players to control a character - it's a blank slate, with no buttons or on-screen sticks, that players use like a touchpad. Slide one finger around the screen and the character moves. The game automatically switches to easy mode when a touchscreen controller is in use.

Cage said the touchscreen feature is an attempt to reel in casual players or those who don't play games often. Most people are comfortable with a smartphone, however, avid players will want to use the DualShock controller, Cage said.JoystiqBeyond: Two Souls has multiplayer, an app that turns touchscreens into controllers originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Aug 2013 06:25:00 EST.
